Meetings & Programs
Kawartha Potters Guild draws potters from Peterbourgh, Lindsay and the surround area of the beautiful Kawarthas.
Please note that we have changed our meeting venue starting in September 2010. They are still every second Monday of the month at 7:00pm. But now we meet at The Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St. Peterborough, which is the same place we hold our annual sales.

Kim O'Brien of Indigo Dragonfly gave us a presentation about the new social networking.
This is what she says of herself:
"I've been a practicing artist and craftsperson since 1992. At the same time I've also worked as the Executive Director of organizations such as the Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands and Visual Arts Ontario, and in Communications and Marketing for The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, The Laidlaw Foundation and the Arts Network for Children and Youth.
Currently I have a small, arts based business called Indigodragonfly which produces hand dyed yarn and patterns, as well as representing local artisans to a worldwide market. Our business is run almost entirely online, with 95% of our clientele outside of Canada. We've recently been featured in Vogue Knitting International magazine.
My presentation will be about how we've built a worldwide business and community around our craft, using social media and online tools as our primary way of communicating with our clientele. I'll also talk about how we're starting to draw people to our home studio as well, as I think that's an important link that would be helpful to you."
This sounds like a talk you won't want to miss!

November 14, 2011

Jane MacIntosh will do a hands-on demo for us, using underglazes and stains. This is an opportunity to try a variety of brush strokes on bisque tiles, which we can take home and fire with a clear glaze.
Plenty of tiles will be provided, as well as newsprint to practise on. Take some tiles home to try in your studio. Please bring with you a variety of brushes, underglazes or stains if you have some and small yoghurt containers for water.
Lillian has approximately 10 boxes of 6x6 tiles for a mural or backsplash if anyone wants them. FREE. For the meeting, she will bring some 4x8 tiles, as well as some 4x4 tiles which people can use to make stripes of various coloured underglazes. The 4x8 tiles would be good for people to try a variety of brush strokes - leaves, flowers, stems, etc.
We will be starting at 6:30 p.m. for a social get together. We can then start promptly at 7 to get all our business done before enjoying a full evening with our guest
October 3rd, 2011 - week early due to Thanksgiving
Chris Montgomery The Glasshopper Studio
With 30+ years of experience in working with glass, Chris will talk on how she is constantly stretching the boundaries of her art form. One of these methods is with sand-etching. She will show how it pertains to glass as well as many other mediums, including pottery. She also incorporates found objects and whimsical accents into her pieces, which keeps her work fresh and exciting. She will provide some technical information along with visual examples of her work.
March 5 & 6, 2011 - Simon Leach
Simon Leach was educated in Somerset, UK and spent many years honing his craft. He has traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East, the U.S. and Canada. For six years, he operated a pottery and showroom in Spain, using stoneware, porcelain and Raku, teaching and demonstrating two week workshops. His experience includes firing in wood, gas, oil, Raku, and electric kilns and he has built a gas kiln for studio production.
This workshop will include how to make and apply handles, pitchers, lidded pieces, fluting, with emphasis on successful production work.
February 14, 2011 -
Jonathan Harper from Waterdown
Demo Evening
"I make domestic ware with strong beginnings and endings and a lot of play in between. My work is made from a reddish stoneware which fires to a black speckled tan colour. Formation of the pots is generally done on a two day cycle where the pots are made on the potter's wheel and slip decorated on the first day, and then trimmed carved and further decorated on the second day.
Applying the slips in a variety of colours on the wheel has led me to a banded separation of the pot surface, which is later carved in geometric patterns largely influenced by basketry and block printing. Slips are layered with loose brush strokes and scratched through to give motion and depth. Pot bottoms are often given attention through carving and slip inlay. My playfulness is most apparent in whimsical forms such as teapots, spaghetti jars and watering cans, and also in my whistles.
My whistles are small leaf inspired figurines which are formed mostly at craft shows and decorated at home. Recently the whistles have influenced my carving patterns and made them a little more playful as well"
This was a wonderful evening with a demonstration of various coloured slips, as well as an opportunity for the group to make whistles! Jonathon shared his instructions for his various whistles and has allowed us to share them here (in pdf format). Enjoy!

January 10, 2011 - Carole and John Bandurchin

2010
March 8 - Ian Chung from Tuckers Pottery Supplies was our guest, advising us on kiln maintenance, finding a used kiln, controller vs kiln sitter.
April 12 - Angelo diPetta from Millbrook will conducted a critique of our work. Members were asked to bring two or three pieces of Their work. Angelo provided suggestions about improving the design of the pieces, improving the glaze and in general helped us to look at our own work in a more critical way so that we will continue to improve.
May 10 - Barbi Taylor from Burlington has successfully run Earthworks Pottery for many years, specializing in red earthenware clay. She also employs part-time individuals who throw and glaze to her specifications.
“My current work started in 1994 with an order for 6 pieces, and within 8 months, I had orders for 600 pieces per month – all by word of mouth. The claim to fame of my work is that the clay neutralizes the acid from wine, removing heartburn and headaches for those who suffer from consuming wine.”
June 14 - Anne Armstrong from Waterford will discuss her gorgeous pit-fired work and how she achieves the colours and affects she is known for. She has also created exquisite raku-fired work. The information she will pass on to us may help us during our Raku Guild Day. Check her out at www.brickworkspottery.com.
