Meetings & Programs

Kawartha Potters Guild draws potters from Peterbourgh, Lindsay and the surround area of the beautiful Kawarthas.

Please note that we have changed our meeting venue starting in September 2010. They are still every second Monday of the month at 7:00pm. But now we meet at The Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St. Peterborough, which is the same place we hold our annual sales.

Upcoming Workshops

July 10 & 11 - Bruce Cochrane will conduct a two-day demo workshop for us. He works on the wheel using stoneware, altering and cutting the work. He is essentially a functional potter. Bruce has been teaching at Sheridan College since 1978, is currently head of the Ceramics Dept., has participated in numerous solo as well as group exhibitions, 80 workshops and lectures, in permanent collections and finalist in the Saidye Bronfman Award.

“After 25 years of working in clay, utility continues to serve as the foundation for my ideas. The pots I make, no matter how simple or complex, are meant to be experienced on a physical and visual level. The way an object carries, lifts, cradles, pours and contains are properties which I strive to make engaging for the user, offering more than just convenience.”

For more information, please take a look at Bruce's flyer (in pdf format)

August 14 - Guild Raku Day at Sheila and Rod Brenchley’s home in Dunsford. Please bring 3 or 4 bisqued pieces ready for glazing or already glazed in your own favourite glaze. Glazes will be provided. There will be a small fee to cover the cost of propane and glazes. You don’t have to use Raku Clay. Stoneware and Porcelain work quite well, with a little care. Potluck Lunch!

October 23-24 - Dan Hill has kindly offered to conduct a hands-on workshop for us on soda firing. This will take place at his studio in Wilno (Barry’s Bay area). Bring 6-10 bisqued pieces and Dan will instruct us on the glaze requirements, how to glaze, how to stack the kiln. Firing will begin overnight with spraying taking place on Sunday. Cone 6 stoneware or porcelain should be used. Cost is $150 + $25 for materials. Limited to 12 people. Accommodation is available nearby, as well as galleries and restaurants. Wilno is approximately 2-1/4 hours from Peterborough. Dan will unload the kiln the following week and pots returned to us at the next Guild meeting

Past Meeting Presenters

March 8 - Ian Chung from Tuckers Pottery Supplies was our guest, advising us on kiln maintenance, finding a used kiln, controller vs kiln sitter.

April 12 - Angelo diPetta from Millbrook will conducted a critique of our work. Members were asked to bring two or three pieces of Their work. Angelo provided suggestions about improving the design of the pieces, improving the glaze and in general helped us to look at our own work in a more critical way so that we will continue to improve.

May 10 - Barbi Taylor from Burlington has successfully run Earthworks Pottery for many years, specializing in red earthenware clay. She also employs part-time individuals who throw and glaze to her specifications.

“My current work started in 1994 with an order for 6 pieces, and within 8 months, I had orders for 600 pieces per month – all by word of mouth. The claim to fame of my work is that the clay neutralizes the acid from wine, removing heartburn and headaches for those who suffer from consuming wine.”

June 14 - Anne Armstrong from Waterford will discuss her gorgeous pit-fired work and how she achieves the colours and affects she is known for. She has also created exquisite raku-fired work. The information she will pass on to us may help us during our Raku Guild Day. Check her out at www.brickworkspottery.com.
